The ranch belonging to J.P. Morgan had been purchased by Dr. George Condon and his wife Fanny for their summer home and it was decided that a Shooting Range would be established there for all to use. The first shooting competition took place at the Range on October 5, 1892 with 30 shooters from Manteca, El Sobrante and other nearby towns attending. It was decided that a Rifle Club should be formed which met monthly until 1909 when it became an Annual Meeting. In 1912, an armory was built on Park Drive and rifle practice began at night using 100 rifles available for members only to shoot at targets located around town during daylight hours. In 1916, a pistol club was started with 4 members and membership increased to 12 in 1918 when rifle ranges were added as well as a Pistol Club room upstairs where handguns could also be used safely while practicing law or hunting under cover of darkness! It wasn’t until 1923 that they added a Shotgun Club which meets monthly now! The next year saw their first airgun meet and soon after pistols too! shotguns were allowed into the clubroom in 1925 making it one of the last clubs to allow this type of weaponry into an American society beforeGun control laws changed forever! The first people to live in Manteca were Native Americans who hunted and gathered plants and animals near present-day Manteca and Bakersfield. A Mexican land grant called Rancho San Pedro de la Union was given to Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo by Spanish conqueror Hernando de Soto on October 16, 1769. The grant included 2,500 acres (1 km²) of land that became Manteca after itself was surveyed in 1836 by James Purdy. The Town of Manteca was incorporated on December 15, 1885. It began as a result of an effort led by Elisha Kreeger to get the name "Manteca" approved for use on a post office map dated November 10, 1886. On July 3, 1888, voters approved the addition of portions of La Quinta to Manteca creating what is now known as Riverside County. In 1916 citizens voted to change the town's name from "Manteca" to "Los Angeles". This vote followed years of petitioning from residents and came about due to concerns about how other nearby towns would be renamed if Manteca continued being called "Manteca." On April 14, 1922 Los Angeles annexed much of Riverside County which included parts of southern Inyo County including Manteca and La Quinta Canyon Village with its own elected officials within Los Angeles City Hall . As a result most residents in these areas left for LA during or soon after annexation and many businesses closed down because they could not compete with city services or taxes levied by LA when they were still part of Riverside County
