Manteca, California is an unincorporated community located in Kern County, California. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of I-5 just south of the Manteca River. Manteca was founded in 1859 by Mormon pioneers as a trading post between Sutter and Nevada Counties. In 1863 it became a town and in 1868 it incorporated as a city. Manteca was named after Samuel D. Manteca, one of the original settlers of Nevada County and future mayor of Reno, Nevada. In 1940 Manteca became home to the first military airfield in Southern California when Naval Air Station Miramar (later Naval Air Station Palmdale) opened on land that had been part of Rancho San Luis Obispo since 1907. NAS Miramar serviced fighter pilots flying Navy aircraft during World War II and postwar missions such as providing cover for troop movements across North America or escorting Convair B-36 bombers to bomb Japanese targets from El Toro Field near Orange County while they were being assembled at assembly plants in nearby Fullerton and Wilmington; there also were occasional flights into Los Angeles International Airport for supplies or landing tests with Army Air Forces bomber groups used Miramar during this time period By 1964 NAS Miramar was closed following completion of naval aviation operations at Vandenberg AFB outside Santa Barbara which replaced it by USAFihilator Wings Regional Airport . Today much of what once were farms now serve asresidential areas or are used for industrial purposes such as pharmaceutical manufacturing plants or a new medical campus being built by University of California - Davis (UCD) in nearby Rancho Cordova which will have about 10,000 students when it's completed in 2020. The first post office at Manteca opened on October 15th 1875 with three letters: DAN-TECA-KERN-. On July 1st 1886 another post office called HARDIN opened with five letters: AGRICULTURAL HARVESTING DEFENSIVE CROSSING COAST LINE ITEM NO 99701 WILSON LAND TITLE 25 YEARS OLD. At this time ranching was predominant so most all mail came through Los Angeles then downriver to Sacramento then north back upriver again to Milpitas before finally reaching its destination in Chico On November 5th 1902 two more post offices were established just south of present day Manteca; one called EAGLE ROCK and the other MANTECA FARM & HOSPITAL after ranchers James Eagleton (1857-1922) & Hiram Crane(1860-) developed those areas northeast of town limits east of Highway 99E today’s Healdsburg area . These two offices functioned concurrently until 1915 when they were discontinued because HTML had been created but not yet published like our current postal service After 1915 only express mail services continued betweenChico and Los Angeles . parcels became available from here On January 1st 1922 US Post Office moved from Tracy location(northwest cornerof Main Streetand First Street) next doorto existing substation #1 withinAntelope Valley Racetrack complex & began deliveries here also w/in 2 weeks
