Manteca, California is a city of over 100,000 people located in the Kern County region of Southern California. Manteca was founded on January 17, 1879 by Lorenzo Dow and John H. Geary as an agricultural town on the banks of the Manteca River. The first post office was opened in 1881. The present-day Manteca Municipal Airport was built in 1939 and is serves the community with scheduled commercial air service. The city's history can be traced back to its early days as a small farming community. In 1879, Lorenzo Dow and John H. Geary founded Manteca on the banks of the Manteca River after coming across an old Spanish land grant that they believed would be available for purchase if they could find enough farmers willing to join them in their efforts to relocate from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (then part of Great Britain). Dow and Geary chose to settle their new town on the riverbank because it offered plenty of space for farming and for building homes; it also had good access to water supplies. By 1886, when Manteca began serving as an incorporated municipality, it had a population of about 300 residents and functioned as a bedroom community for larger towns nearby such as Redding and Saugus.
