The town grew rapidly and by 1857 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1861, the United States acquired California from Mexico and renamed it the United States of America. Manteca became part of this new country and began to grow rapidly again with new businesses opening up. In 1934, Manteca incorporated as a city under state law and has since grown even more popular than before as a place where families can call home. Today, Manteca is known for its vibrant downtown scene full of cultural events, its beautiful architecture and its rich history which includes some of the most famous people from California such as Presidents James K Polk and Franklin D Roosevelt.
Manteca, California was founded in 1849 by Josiah Gregg and his wife Eliza. The post office at Manteca was established in 1852. The first school in Manteca was a small cabin built by the Greggs on the east side of the tracks between Greenville and Greenville Heights. In 1856, the Greggs moved to their present location on Elm Street and opened a school which served grades K-8. In 1865, Josiah Gregg died suddenly and his widow continued to operate the school until her death in 1868. In 1870, she married Augustus Fenton. The couple operated a grocery store until 1888 when they sold it and moved to Redding where they lived for many years before moving back to Manteca in 1922. They donated their home, now known as Mrs. Fenton House, to Manteca High School in 1951
