In 1979 Manteca voters passed a resolution to annex part of neighboring Moreno Valley which created new demand for services within Manteca itself which revived the town's economy. Today, Manteca is home to around 100 residents who are slowly revitalizing its community with some hope that it may one day regain its former glory as an agricultural center dating back to gold Rush times
Manteca, California was founded on July 6, 1853 by Joshua Chamberlain and his wife Anna. The first post office in Manteca opened on July 10, 1853. Manteca was named after the town of Mantua, Italy. The original town plat included a large mill which worked water from the Sutter Creek below. The first store in Manteca was called the "Pacific Mill" and opened on May 15, 1854 by Elisha Fenton. The citizens of Manteca voted to name their new town after Joshua Chamberlain who donated land for the community. On October 5, 1857, a fire destroyed the Pacific Mill and all its equipment but notchant Hannah Bancroft rebuilt it with her own money within a week. In 1865, Jenson & Bros dry goods store was built at corner of First Street and Mission Road. In 1907 King Cottonseed Company built a storage warehouse at 600-620 Mission Road which still stands today as an industrial building used by many different businesses over the years including Chevron Corporation and Samsung Electronics Company
