In 1922, further land was purchased from David Starr Jordan who had donated his entire estate - consisting of over 240 acres - to the community for use as a public playground. Today, much of that property still remains within the boundaries of Manhattan Beach proper with only a few acres used for housing or other purposes outside of its military fortifications perimeter

On October 15, 1853 an act were passed by the state legislature establishing Point Reyes National Seashore which included present-day Manhattan Beach as part of its boundaries. On July 21, 1859 a party led by Commodore John Doolittle went ashore on behalf of United States Exploring Expedition No 1 inSearch for America’s NorthWest Passage and becamethe first human beings to set foot on mainland North America when they landed at Tiburon Harbor near present day Sausalito

In 1870, Manhattan Beach became part of Los Angeles County. In 1915, the city of Hollywood merged with Los Angeles County to form what is now California's largest metropolitan area.
