Manhattan Beach is a small town inSouthern California on the Pacific Coast. It is located on the east coast of San Diego County, about 25 miles (40 km) south of downtown San Diego and about 30 miles (50 km) north of downtown Los Angeles. Manhattan Beach was founded on December 29, 1853 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and his wife, Lucy. The town was named after the manhattan project of Manhattan Island. It grew rapidly in population due to its location near the new San Francisco Bay Bridge and other waterfront sites. By 1870, the town had a population of over 10,000 people. The first post office was established in 1874. In 1886, Manhattan Beach became part of the city of San Francisco. A fire destroyed many homes in 1888 but did not damage the town center which remained standing until 1906 when it caught fire again and burned to the ground. In 1916, Manhattan Beach annexed adjacent communities of Dogpatch and Candlestick Park which made it one of the most densely populated areas in California at that time. The annexation created a suburb with a high concentration of jobs for sailors and other seafarers as well as people who worked in downtown San Francisco. In 1940, during World War II, Manhattan Beach served as an emergency landing zone for USS Missouri (BB-59) following her sinking off Japan's coast during Operation Hailstone.
