Manhattan Beach, California is a town located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 31,557 at the 2010 census. The first shootings in Manhattan Beach occurred on April 15, 1892 when four men were shot at a saloon by two shooters who had mistaken it for a gambling hall. On May 5th of that same year, seven men and one woman were shot at an opera performance by three gunmen who believed that the audience would be too drunk to resist their gunfire. In 1903, gunmen opened fire on a wedding procession from a small church in downtown Manhattan Beach; no one was killed but nine people were injured including six women and children. That same year also saw the first homicide in Manhattan Beach when Julius LaRoche killed his brother-in-law with a bow and arrow while target shooting on Rifle Range Road outside of town. "In 1923," reports the History of ManhAttBeach website " Mayor James Ahern announced plans to build an indoor swimming pool which would become known as 'The Venice Pool'. This project cost $350,000 and construction began on November 17th 1925." The pool opened to public use on December 3rd of that year and has served as both a source of municipal revenue (via assessments) and recreation for residents ever since. During World War II, Manhattan Beach became an important naval base due to its location just offshore from Santa Monica Boulevard where warships could berth for repairs or photoops during wartime exercises off Catalina Island. As more civilians filled up our beachesortunes changed; most notably in 1951 when Naval Base Ventura County closed Due to budget cuts however gunslingers continued to shoot at marines practicing maneuvers out nearby until 1953 when Navy Installations finished their activities ashore endangering everyone living nearby . Eventually Gunnery School moved ashore somewhere else within mainland LAtom City beachcomprising all troops not based aboard shipyards or naval bases). In 1957 gun thugs started targeting joggers along South Coast Highway adjacent TOthe city limits killing 4 people before finally being caught after 1 yr! Park rangers responded with nonlethal spray can shots which stopped any further assaults

In 1916, work began on building Navy Pier which would become one of downtown Los Angeles' most important symbols and continue operation until 1964 when it was closed for renovation and reopened as an amusement park
The Manhattan Beach area was settled by the Ohlone people in the late 18th century. The first white person to live in the area was John C. Fremont, who founded Fremont Township on the Peninsula in 1847. In 1870, Charles Evans Hughes named a bay on Manhattan Beach after himself and developed it into what is now known as Hughes Bay. The town of Manhattan Beach was incorporated as a city in 1914. In 1969, Mayor George Moscone declared New Year's Day an "affordable holiday" for residents of the city and its annexed beach communities, making it one of only two US cities (the other being Oakland) to do so.
