The first permanent European settlement in what is now Manhattan Beach was made by Spanish colonists in 1795 during their attempt to open up present-day California for settlement by virtue of their Mexican grants. The original name for this area was "Pueblo de la Bahía" (Bay Pueblo). In 1846, when Mexico became an American country, its citizens changed the name to Manhattan Beach after Brooklyn, New York City and it remained that way until 1959 when it was changed back to its original name. In 1907, Mayor James J. Cannon donated land along Broadway Avenue for a public park which would later become known as Manhattan Beach Park; Cannon also served as namesake for the current beach honorific given to him by then-Mayor George Burge in 1966. On July 1, 1960, while under U.S. President John F Kennedy's Executive Order 9464 which established national monuments around America's scenic towns and villages, Manhattan Beach received full city status from his predecessor Mayor James Cannon with all municipal powers vested therein including zoning and planning power over development within its boundaries henceforth subject only to state approval or veto pending such review under City Council rules and regulations lower down than those governing cities with city status like San Francisco or Los Angeles whereZoning allows no building without prior Planning Permission from State Architectural Control Board #4 & 5... Eight years passed before another mayor took office with plans being underway for annexation by Contra Costa County but that did not happen until 1978 when then County Supervisor Don Pogue recommended annexation because he saw potential growth potential due to new Interstate 80 construction just south of town limits extending all the way into Marin County creating new residential subdivisionshellipulating areas off Broadway eastward past Point Reyes Station thereby making possible what would eventually be called Manhattan Beaches totaling 8 square miles north of downtown—a still undeveloped area today filled mostly with homes built since 1978 In 1990 an amendment was proposed by Supervisor Linda Chavez which would have rezoned much ofletting go ahead authorizes single family dwellings on .3 acres per household along avenues leading out from Avenue G & H Streets uptown facing Thurston Street (northwest side) & west side commercial corridors running parallel thereto becoming maximums at 6 stories height consistent with existing buildings thereon now used as parking lots behind them...the amendment failed 7-2 having been opposed mainly by developers who saw increased density near busy arterial streets rather than anywhere near open space or open access spaces ideal for walkability or community gathering place desired hereby [emphasis added]." The development of high quality telescopic sights began in earnest during World War I when advances were made in optics technology such as microlenses and oil immersion lenses allowing manufacturers more creative designs for riflescopes including variable power turrets that enabled greater adjustments while aiming at targets distant beyond 400 meters (.300 yd). During World War II new developments included fiberglass stocks which offered increased durability against wear and tear while still providing ease of use when using sniper rifles or machine guns over long ranges due to their relatively small size compared to other firearm types

Heading inland from Venice along Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 95), he observed that "the people hereabouts are very good fishermen". In 1915, New York City built an airfield at what would later be known as Palos Verdes Peninsula and used it to launch bombers during World War I. The area now occupied by Manhattan Beach was then undeveloped; no homes were built until after World War II when lots began to be developed primarily because of military use or naval dockyards which served Los Angeles Harbor. The first post office in this area was established in 1907 with Pico Boulevard as its mailing address. The first store had been opened by J J Rankin & Sons on Ocean Boulevard near present day Airport Way S., across from where Olympic Studios now stands
