By 1833, Spanish traders had established a rancho at what is now Manhattan Beach Boulevard and Broadway. In 1851, Dodge established his own business empire in southern California by buying land at the mouth of Manzanita Creek from Mission San José de la Raza officials for $1,000 (). In 1920, Harry M. Dodge donated 3 acres (0 km2) to be used as an agricultural community called "Manhattan Beach". He named it after his home state of New York where he had moved when he was born in 1865. The first buildings were erected on this site during 1922-23 when Manhattan Beach became an unincorporated rural municipality under the jurisdiction of Huntington County (). In 1951, with the passage of Proposition 8 (Proposition 7), which banned gay marriage statewide in California, Manhattan Beach became one of only two cities in California to become exclusively gay-owned and -operated businesses (), with other notable exceptions such as Burbank () and Glendale (). The following year saw the opening of its first gay pride parade down Main Street (), followed by its own annual Gay Freedom Day celebration on July 4th (). The borough also hosted its first international drag queen competition () in 1984
