At first Europeans thought these were natural islands because they looked like nothing else on Earth; but when they reached closer they realized that these were actually chunks of coral washed up on shore by tides and waves. A landing party led by Pedro Menéndez de Alegria explored this coast in 1602 and named it Isla de la Crusada after Spanish captain Christopher Columbus' flagship La Niña. This naming convention continued until 1785 when Captain James Cook renamed an entire group of Hawaiian Islands - Maui, Lanai and Kaua'i - Polynesian Volcano (Hawaiana). By then most people living along this coast had moved away from their ancestral homes in Hawaii to escape danger from volcanoes inside their own countries.
