The first hard gun case in Manhattan Beach was a holdup on October 15, 1903. A man named John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and his partner, Harry Bridges, were trying to purchase a shotgun from the Gunsmiths Shop at 375 West 24th Street when they were stopped by two men who demanded their money. The robber took the shotgun and ran away with it. The victim reported the incident to the police and they arrested both robbers. At their trial, Bridges claimed he had not known what he was getting himself into by buying the shotgun; however, Rockefeller testified that he knew of the weapon's serial number and that he had ordered it from the Gunsmiths Shop just days earlier. In response to Bridges' claim of ignorance, prosecutors argued that because Rockefeller knew about the weapon's serial number and its availability, he must have known how dangerous it could be and therefore should have been more cautious in his purchase. The jury acquitted Bridges of any charges related to the holdup but found him guilty of conspiracy to commit robbery (a misdemeanor) instead of using knowledge gained from purchasing a firearm for purposes other than lawful shooting. This case is significant as it markedthe first time an acquittal was given for conspiracy to commit robbery after allegations of illegal possession were made against someone else involved in an unrelated crime

In 1846, the US government bought all of Alameda County, including Manhattan Beach, for $10 million. In 1868–69, shortly before American Civil War II began, a group of soldiers under General John J. Pershing fought an unsuccessful battle against Mexican forces at Manhattan Beach while artillerymen on shore watched from a longboat. The beach became known as Battle Beach because of this event and remains popular with tourists today as one of the most dramatic battlefields in American history. In 1912, when local builder Samuel Morse opened his first store along Harbor Boulevard near where he now lives (and which still stands), downtown Manhattan Beach had only two buildings: the Methodist Episcopal Church (now Christmastime Lodge) on First Street and a small frame schoolhouse on Second Street that served grades K-12. Morse built several more stores and homes over time until his store became one of the largest employers in town; by 1920 it employed 100 people or more outfitting traders during busy seasons such as Christmas season alone according to city records Morse's son developed the family business into what is now known as Bay Area Radio Corporation through his sons Sam and Roy Jr., who both worked there until 1984 when Bay Area Radio Corporation merged with KPIX TV television station to form KQED Television corporation which continues to operate out of its old building located at 777 First Street today
Manhattan Beach was first settled in the early 1800s by Native Americans. The name Manhattan Beach is derived from the Dutch map of New Netherland which showed a beach on the mouth of Long Island Sound. In 1848, Sutter and his brother John founded the town of Redondo Beach on Long Island as a place for their new gold mine. In 1870, Manhattan Beach became an incorporated town with a population of only 100 people. The town was named after New York City and its residents voted to change it in 1922 because they felt that it was more appropriate for their community than nearby Hermosa Beach. In 1927, Los Angelesona Electric Railway began running service along what is now Manhattan Beach Boulevard. This made the area very accessible for tourists and led to considerable development, including homes, businesses, and apartment buildings being built throughout the 1930s and 1940s as L A became one of America's most popular tourist destinations. As waves of immigrants arrived in search of jobs during World War II, many families moved into this area and today there are over 1 million people living in this unique enclave within Southern California
