The first permanent European settlement in Manhattan Beach was made by the Spanish in 1764. The area then known as "Township of Manhattan Beach" became part of Alta California in 1821 when Mexican nationals joined the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, a group of Native Americans led by Capt. Manuel Nieto and Lt. Gov. José Antonio Arguello attacked American soldiers at Point Conception on Manhattan Beach. One American soldier was killed and three were wounded before Mexico won the war and took control of California. In 1850, an act was passed providing for Townships to be formed throughout Alta California and creating a Board of Trustees to manage them. In 1861, following the American Civil War, Northern Californians established East Los Angeles Academy (now UCLA) on Manhattan Beach Boulevard near Point Conception Creek in what is now downtown LA. In 1892, following another act that provided for Townships to be formed throughout Alta California, Brooklyn Heights began to be developed with high-rise buildings being built there beginning in 1898. During World War II, many servicemen from nearby Long Beach came to work on shipyards or perform other military service in facilities along Santa Monica Boulevard and Hollywood Boulevard north of LACMMO; these areas are now called Koreatown and Little Tokyo respectively
