The popularity of this inland port caused it to be designated as an open-air oceanfront park by then-Mayor George Norris on May 5, 1945; it remains so today. In 1951, three miles (4 km) south of downtown Manhattan Beach along State Route 1Ewas founded the townsite for Hermosa beach which quickly became popular for swimming but also offered good fishing opportunities both offshore from Hermosa Point Lomashore just north of town line into Imperial County () beyond Soquel Creek (), east from Pacific Coast Highway (). In 1957 there were only 4 homes built within town limits providing most people associated with mainland OB&O water sports activities/resorts
