In 1795, Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolà discovered what is now Manhattan Beach while sailing along the California Coast. In 1870, construction began on Los Angeles County's first courthouse at what is now Main Street and Ocean Avenue. The building served as county seat until 1909 when it was moved to Hollywood. Many early businesses in downtown Manhattan Beach were run by Chinese immigrants who had come to work on local mining properties during the gold rush of 1849-50. Many of these Chinese families remain active in community life to this day. By 1880, only a few hundred people lived in downtown Manhattan Beach; most residents worked out of their homes or small businesses along Main Street and Ocean Avenue. However, over time Downtown ManhattanBeach has experienced a significant population growth due to its location within walking distance of both elementary and high schools as well as post office, grocery store, library, doctor’s office etc., making it an ideal place for retail development and becoming one of Southern California’s most vibrant communities
