Manhattan Beach is a small town in southern California, located on the Pacific Ocean. In honor of their father's death six years earlier, they dedicated their new city center "Meyerhoff Park" (now part of MacArthur Park). The Streets from Meyerhoff Park southward were lined with granite quarries that supplied the streetlights along El Camino Real until 1922; at that time all granite quarrying ended except for a short stretch near Chavez Ravine where a few hundred yards of granite run parallel to El Camino Real between Chavez Ravine Boulevard and Highland Avenue were left standing as evidence of how much granite was once used hereabouts during those days On July 15th 1870 Samuel Morse sent his first letter over telegraph wire from New York City but this was only one among many early technological innovations developed here including: water mains being installed in 1893; streetcars starting service in 1903; electric lights becoming standard in 1907; prohibition beginning November 30thdry alcohol being sold throughout most or all areas effective January 1st 1912 A post office called "Manhattan" was established at Broadway and Yorba Linda Streets on December 11th 1872 ; it moved to its current location on First Street about two miles eastshoreline from downtown Los Angeles on April 26th 1888 Augustus Saint Gaudens donated land adjoining his Pasadena property for use as a military reservation known as Rancho Palos Verdes which became fully operative February 14th 1906 with 9500 acres . On September 25th 1907 Leland Stanford announced plans for anexpressway connecting Los Angeles with San Francisco via Torrance so named because it would pass through central Long Beach County . This section became Interstate 5

In 1898, John Dethridge built a resort called Beacheside Inn on Beacheside Road which became one of Southern California's most popular tourist destinations until it closed down in 1962 because of high water levels caused by severe drought conditions during the 1960s Carrington destructions. In 1821, Manuel Nieto set up a small mission here and named it Nuestra Señora del Carmen after one of Mexico's patron saints. The mission was abandoned in 1847 because of continuous attacks from Native Americans. In 1853, the United States bought out the Mexican land grants and renamed Manhattan Beach after President James K. Polk. As America's largest seaport, New York City used Manhattan Beach as its primary port during World War II. The area became an annexed part of Los Angeles County in 1932.
