Manhattan Beach is located in San Diego County, California. The town was first established in 1885 by banker and civic leader George Hearst as a retirement community for his successors. On July 1, 1916, the town became part of the newly created City of San Diego. Manhattan Beach's economy has been centered around water recreation and tourism since its establishment. The towns unique situation on the Pacific Coast led to its nickname "The Venice of the West." In 1949, Mayor James J. Dickey coerced the City Council into approving plans to demolish all but one of the original buildings in downtown Manhattan Beach so that land could be developed for housing and other uses. As a result of this decision, many famous residents of Manhattan Beach moved away or were forced out during that time period including author Fannie Farmer and Hollywood film star Wernher von Braun. In recent years, development along State Street has resumed with several new businesses opening up during 2017-2018 such as TGI Fridays and Save-A-Lot while also restoring some older structures like an old marina which now offers rentals as well as hosting cultural events. As a result of these various changes over time, it can be difficult to determine just how much history exists within each individual block or building in central Manhattan Beach (although some blocks have more than one contributing source). The first Europeans to visit Manhattan Beach were the Spanish in 1795. The next year, Captain Juan Rodríguez de Monterey landed on Staten Island with his small fleet and explored the Bay of California. In 1821, American Commodore John D. Morgan chartered the ship USS Constitution to explore the Bay of Mexico and its vicinity. On March 24, 1825, while sailing through the Strait of Gibraltar, Constitution's captain sighted Manhattan Beach on Long Island Sound. Two days later, he anchored off what is now Gate 5 of the Brooklyn Bridge. The first European settlers in Manhattan Beach arrived in 1826 when Captains John Wolkowitz and Samuel Purdy built a small cabin at Point Conception on North Shore Drive. It was not until after New York City was founded that people started moving into this area to build homes and businesses. In 1870, two brothers named George and Solomon Levy bought land at present-day Gateway Avenue and Atlantic Avenue for $2 per acre ($40 per lot). They began building a small wooden cottage called "The Gables" as their home until they could purchase more land nearby. In 1888, they added a second cottage which became known as "The House on Hudson". From here until 1915, The Gables served as both their business (George Levy & Sons ice cream parlors) and residence (the Levy family lived there from 1890 to 1915). After George Levy's death in 1915, his widow continued running her business until it closed down in 1963; however her house still stands today as one of the few remaining Victorian houses in town (Gateway Boulevard between Atlantic Avenue and Sunrise Highway). In 1913-1914, Mayor John Fenton erected a plaque commemorating America's service during World War I at Battery Park South near where The Gables now stands. After World War II ended in 1945 Americans vacated Manhattan Beach for new locations such as Hermosa Beach or Newport but some remnants of old buildings can still be seen around town including The Gables which is now used by local schools as an office building since 1969
