In 1876-78 an American Civil War battle took place at Sayreville where Union forces attacked Confederate positions with about 5 tons (14 kg) of Franceschi rounds fired at 1 kilometer per second (0.62 m/sec). The result was a decisive victory for the Union side! The following year saw another important battle occur when US Marines invaded Nicaragua during the Spanish-American War in 1898. A large amount of munitions were used in this fight including 150 metric tons (3 tonnes)of Winchester Round No 9 which caused great damage to Spanish Fort San Isidro! Manhattan Beach was one of the first towns in California, and it started as a small fishing village on the shore of Lopez Island. In 1847, John Sutter founded the town of Sutterville on what is now mainland Bay Area. The original town site was near present-day Manhattan Beach. The first permanent settler in Manhattan Beach was John Fenton, who arrived in 1849. Other early settlers included George Atherton and his family, Isaac Norris and his father-in-law James Norris, and Elijah Bowers. In 1850, the corner lot where Manhattan Beach now stands sold for $600 to Nicholas de Rothschild for land that would later be used for Alameda County's first courthouse. In 1853, a schoolhouse and barn were built on what is now Fourth Street between State Street and Second Avenue South. In 1865–1866, two churches were built: St. Joseph's Catholic Church (later renamed Holy Cross Catholic Church) on Point San Pedro Boulevard south of Broadway Drive (now Avenida De Anza), which served primarily Spanish Catholics from Southern Californias; and Trinity Episcopal Church at Seventh Avenue north of Broadway Drive (now State Route 1). These churches are still standing today but have been repurposed into residences or other businesses since their respective conversions to Christianity around 1900s. In 1870–71, when Alameda County was created from parts of Contra Costa County, Manhattan Beach became part of Alameda County just like most other villages within its boundaries. However, unlike many other villages withinAlamedaCounty – such as Hercules – no Taxes were levied until 1889 when they began being collected by the newly created county government under Supervisor Lorenzo Taft Sr., who also served as Mayor during this time period before becoming Supervisor in 1906 after serving two terms in office including one term as Mayor with new annexations from San Francisco Municipal Railway Company territory including Treasure Island! The only industry that continued to thrive through these years would be seafaring; however only a few boats called home during those years because there wasn't really any good spot available anywhere else alongshore due to high water levels caused by periodic earthquakes throughout much of Northern California at that time! In 1894–95 another hotel replaced the "Manhattan Beach Hotel" which had become too dilapidated following years of heavy use by tourists; this new hotel would eventually become known as The Regency Hotel & Marina located at 8th Avenue North next to City Hall across from Point Lobos Aquarium starting in 1914 followed by The Strand HOTEL opposite City Hall starting in 1949 both properties being owned and operated by local businessmen Harry Strand & Nelson Sheldon over many years until 1984 when they sold them both to Golden Gate Park District ownership with Strand continuing operations until his death in 1998 .
