As a result of this decline in Ammo production, prices began to increase which impacted not only society but also businesses throughout California. In 1865, there were only 8 companies left manufacturing ammo in America; however by 1870 this number had plummeted to 4 companies operating out of just 2 towns in California: Claremont and Manhattan Beach. The decline of Ammo production can be traced back to several factors: technological advances which made firearms more destructive; competition from other states (especially Great Britain) which led to an increase in low-quality products; military engagements which led to decreased demand for munitions; and finally economic recession which caused many businesses to close their doors permanently or reduce their workforce accordingly. Notwithstanding all these challenges, Ammoproduction continued until at least 1915 when it was completely replaced by explosives as the main source of fire damage control munition on warships worldwide
