These Swivel mounted guns were able to provide soldiers with increased firepower while remaining accurate thanks largely to improved sighting systems developed during World War II such as The "Thirdman" sight system utilising rings on iron sights screwed onto turreted guns found on medium tanks and Howitzers etc., however these systems were not generally adopted until after reconnaissance flights by USAF pilots showed Col John Aitken's concept for an airborne platform incorporating both ground based sighting equipment (GBSE) for long distance engagements ashore whilst flying over enemy territory at high altitude proved practical; this was designated Lockheed UH-1 Cobra 'A' helicopter aerial target designation project - later christened 'The Eagle'. During much of the 1960s/1970s both US Army/Marine Corps troops equipped with M4 carbines also carried surplus Browning Hi-Powers fitted with side view mirror sights ('targets') known colloquially as 'monkey bars'. This type of mount consisted simply of a rod extending from near rear sling spot (usually along centerlineof weapon), approximately 25mm below grip level, into which mirror sight could be attached via rotating screwdriver handle before being raised above hand so target could be seen right downrange without having any contact with gun muzzle! monkey bars continued in service through Vietnam & subsequent wars including Desert Storm though eventually replaced by Picatinny rails?
