Malibu is a small town in the Santa Monica Mountains of Southern California. It is located about 25 miles east of Los Angeles, and about 85 miles north of Vancouver, British Columbia. The town was founded in fragments of two small villages which had been amalgamated by local landowner John Doheny in 1876. Malibu's name comes from a now-defunct lintel on the old Rancho Malibu property which read "Mala bella". The community was originally called "Mandeville" and "Pinecrest", but changed to Malibu in 1886 following a vote by the residents. The first post office opened at Malibu on December 12, 1887. The first store, operated by Mrs. Fenton, opened on May 1, 1888. In 1889, Mr. Doheny built himself a cedar ranch house here which has served as the town hall ever since. The commercial center of Malibu began to grow rapidly during this time with several stores opening up and numerous people moving into the area to take advantage of its boomtown atmosphere. By 1908 there were over 100 businesses operating in Malibu alone and it had become one of the most important commercial centers in southern California. During World War II many prominent Hollywood figures came to live or work in Malibu including Douglas Fairbanks Sr., Clark Gable and Katharine Hepburn among others; however, due to its remote location few people actually lived there during that time period other than those who worked or vacationed here
