The first requirement for ammunition manufacturing in Malibu was an open-air firing range which was located on Topanga Drive near present day Pacific Coast Highway. Ammunition production continued at this location until 1944 when it moved to nearby Santa Monica Boulevard. This location would continue to be used until 1966 when it closed down due to air pollution concerns. From 1946 through 1957, ammunition manufacturer Hornady produced their new rifles and shotguns at their newly constructed factory on Stallion Way near present day Topanga Canyon Boulevard. In 1961, Winchester merged with Hornady creating what is now one of the largest rifle ammunition companies in the world with over $5 billion in sales year-over-year! In 1978, Remington Arms Company leased adjacent land from Carbine & Supply Corporation and formed Remington Arms Co., Incorporated (RAIC). RAIC manufactured pistols and revolvers out of .22 LR ammo as well as rifles including both Blackpowder and Classic models starting in 1984. In 1990, Ruger Firearms Corporation purchased Remington Arms Co., Incorporated for $4 million making Ruger one of the largest firearms companies in the world!

In 1859 Captain John Browning developed the first practical rifle rounds composed of explosive caps that would go off when striking any object within five feet of the muzzle of the rifle – this became known as “the powdergram” round. Rifle rounds continued to be made up until 1903 when new methods for manufacturing bullets began making cannonball-sized warheads possible that could explode on impact with targets

In 1917, The Hughes Manufacturing Company joined forces with John Farrow Sr.'s Hughes Gunsmithing Company to form what would become known as Hughes Aircraft Corporation. The earliest types of ammunition were shot putters, which were developed in China over 4,000 years ago. These shot putters allowed people to practice shooting without having to go outside and fight with other people. Shot putters worked by hitting a piece of wood with a stick and then releasing it so that it would rebound off the ground and hit another person on top of them (Goudreau). The Chinese also developed muskets, which were similar to the American Revolutionary War rifle but had a long barrel instead of a short barrel. With this technology, they were able to able to defeat European armies at times (Goudreau). The next type of ammunition was cannonball ammo. Cannonballs were made out of lead or bronze balls that weighed between 2 and 20 pounds (Lench Museum). They would be filled with gunpowder and then set off into the air by firing an artillery piece called an arquebus (Quinnell). Cannonballs would travel very fast and cause great damage if they hit their target(Vandiver Museum). After cannons became more common in Europe, people started using more varied types of ammo for them such as grenades, rockets, torpedoes, mines, etc.(Heller Museum). In 1545 AD Englishman Christopher Wren designed what is now known as the world’s first fireworks display using munitions he had created from small pieces of brass-coated tin saltpeter shells(Fletcher Library). Eventually all kinds of ammunition came about because it was needed in various wars; however, some types are better suited than others for certain activities such as artillery fire or hunting(Fletcher Library). For example, explosive rounds are better suited for warfare because they can kill large numbers of people quickly whilerapnel rounds tend to do less damage but can still kill someone(Heller Museum). Additionally bullets have different properties that make them ideal for different tasks; examples include armor Piercing capacity which makes them effective against armored targets while being ineffective against unprotected individuals(Boyd Library) or penetrating power which allows projectiles like rifles Bullets to penetrate through metal roofs/walls/etc.(Becker Archives)
In the early 1800s, pistols and rifles were both muzzle loading firearms. The process of loading a round into a pistol or rifle involved putting the cartridge case into the chamber of the gun and pulling the firing pin. This action caused powder to be pushed up through a tube that passed under the barrel and into the cartridge case. The bullet then traveled down this tube and exited the gun at an angle, defying gravity and flying out in all directions.
