Madera, California is a small town located in the Mojave Desert of southern California. The population was estimated at just over 9,000 as of 2010, making it one of the most rural areas in the state. Madera is known for its wine production and for being home to the largest winery in the United States, Chateau Ste. Michelle. The first Europeans to visit Madera were Spanish missionaries who traveled through the area in 1821-22. It wasn't until after Mexican independence from Spain that residents began exploring this region looking for new land to settle. In 1847, two brothers by the name of Gillespie bought land between Madera and Riverside counties (now Kern County). They named their property Madera Rancho because they wanted it to be seen as a separate ranch from neighboring Rancho San Luis Rey de Californias which was under Mexican control at that time. By 1850, there were over 100 people living in and around Madara with some working on Gillespie's farm and others living off the surrounding country. In 1852, Gillespie sold his rancho to Wm Hurlbut who built a large adobe house here called "The Old Mill". The mill produced flour for local breadwinner families and also made bricks for building houses and other structures. Over time, additional buildings were added to The Old Mill including an oven used by maderas themselves as well as an assay office where taxes were collected and various other governmental functions took place hereabouts (e.g., county seat). Wm Hurlbut died in 1865 but his son John Hurlbut continued running The Old Mill until 1893 when it was leased by Jepson Electric Railway Company which renamed it The Jepson Lumber Company Building (later still known as Ponderosa Hall) due to its prominent location within walking distance of several hotels near downtown Madera Timeline: 1861 - First white person arrived in Madera area when William Ewing stops at current day intersection of Moberly Rd./Rancho Santa Fe Dr.: This marks beginning of regular visits by Americans throughout Mojave Desert
