In 1856, John C. Frémont began his journey westward to explore the new continent. On July 14,1858 he left from Madera, California with a small party of men in an attempt to find and map the land that would soon become California. After several weeks of travel they reached the San Joaquin Valley on August 12th. The party then continued their journey up the valley until they reached Mendocino County on September 16th. Here Frémont met and befriended General George Armstrong Custer; this event is often credited as beginning the American Civil War. After spending some time exploring Mendocino County, Frémont's group returned south towards Sacramento on October 20th; however, because of a blizzard conditions had caused most of the overland mail to be cancelled and many supplies were running low. Upon reaching Sacramento, Frémont's group again faced challenges trying to get goods across the state line into Oregon Territory (now known as Nevada). Finally reaching Reno on November 5th, they finally got back home after an arduous trip that lasted almost three months! It was during this period that scopes became very popular in America thanks in part to Captain James Cook who discovered Australia in 1770 while mapping out New Zealand for English settlers. Many people were curious about what these strange looking objects could do and so interest grew in scopes throughout America. In 1856 Father Francis Xavier Amadeus Goodrich purchased a 2 1/2 inch refractor telescope from Ayer Observatory in England which he used for astronomical research at Redwood Park near San Francisco until his death in 1916. During this time good riddance actually happened though when Congress banned amateur astronomy due to financial concerns brought on bytelescope manufacturers such as Celestron and Marconi who saw Amateur astronomers as competition instead of partners or supporters of science fiction like them! A few years later both Celestron and Marconi went bankrupt but their legacy lives on through telescopes designed specifically for astronomical use including Dobsonian reflectors which are now becoming more common than ever before thanks largely to advances in digital technology! It is also worth noting that early scopes like Galilean Telescopes were only able to resolve around 60x whereas modern high-power telescopes can Resolution up TO 400x today! What we see today with our eyes cannot be explained without understanding how these devices worked back then!

The area now comprising Madera and its surrounds were part of Alta California from 1821 to 1848 when they were annexed by Santa Clara County. The post office at Madera was established on March 14, 1851, and named for José María del Pérez de Madera y Dominguez, president of Mexico during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). The madero word means "riverbank." In 1868, John Sutter founded the city of Sutterville on land he purchased from José Joaquín Valdez. On July 14, 1849, California became the 41st state in the United States. The land that is now Madera County was part of Alta California before it was Mexican territory. On October 16, 1850, just a month after California became a state, the first post office in Madera County was established at Grass Valley. The county seat was originally at Grass Valley until 1866 when it moved to Madera and remains there today. In 1854-55, three men traveling as far east as Truckee made an unsuccessful attempt to find water supplies for their cattle on what is now the Stanislaus River. They named their new community of Madera after one of these men - John C. Fremont
