The townsite of Madera was founded in 1853 by twenty-six pioneers who were led by Captain George Goodwin and Lieutenant John Sutter. Madera's first post office opened in 1854. The history of Madera goes back to 1853 when twenty-six American pioneer soldiers and their families called themselves the "Maderas" arrived at Monterey Bay from Missouri on horseback after weeks of travel on their way to claim new land north of San Francisco Bay. They named their new settlement for General Manuel de Alvarado y Costilla whose forces had recently been defeated at the Battle of Zabriskie Creek near Sacramento Valley (now Fresno). Captain George Goodwin and Lieutenant John Sutter were among those leading the group that founded Madera on February 12, 1853. At first, only six people lived in what is now downtown Madera: Captain Goodwin, Lieutenant Sutter, Mrs. Sutter, four children of Mr. Sutter's second wife Anna Maria Chappell (died 1865), Mary Ann Hutton (1810 - 1886), David Ladd (1815 - 1895) and William McKinney (1819 - 1900). By 1860 there were over 100 citizens living in downtown Madara with about 60% Anglo heritage as well as Spanish and Mexican immigrants who made up almost half the population then. On May 15th 1870 Captain Justus Cady discovered gold near present day Yuba City while prospecting for mining claims adjacent to his property which would become known as Cady Gulch . On October 10th 1870 he put forth a claim for US$5 per ton he mined from 3 foot deep until it reached 4 feet below surface but no one followed up on his investment because gold fever had hit then too hard! According to historian Beverly Hofstadter: "Cady's discovery changed everything; it looked likemadearroundabout himwas bonnier than ever before... Gold seekers flocked to Calafia [near Vacaville] where exploiters plunderedthe hillsides for lode coalitionsoreand richerthaneverbefore." With Alta California under Mexican rule, madera became part of Californias new territory. In 1881, a group of Englishmen led by Captain Arthur Griffith founded an agricultural colony called Atherton near present-day Madera while exploring central valley country for gold prospectors. When news arrived that gold had been found at Sutter's Mill on Mare Island in Sacramento County (later known as Northern California) in 1848, many prospectors began traveling through central valley country looking for rich deposits that would rival those at Sutter's Mill and Gold Rush era cities such as San Francisco and Sacramento. By 1861, Atherton had grown into a small city with 635 residents when it was destroyed during an accidental fire caused by inmates at Calaveras Prison who were trying to start a fire inside the prison structure themselves instead of using candles set out for that purpose
