With this donation, Yerba Buena became one of the earliest American settlers in Madera County. In 1870 cattle ranchers established what would become known as Stockton Valley Cattle Company on high ground just south of present-day Madera. The company operated until 1910 when it merged into what is now Browning-Ferris Incorporated. The original homesteads for many early settlers are still standing within today's limits of Madera; some remain unrestored while others have been remodeled or rebuilt over time. A few years after his purchase from José Joaquin Moraga, Antonio YerbaBuena donated 328 acres to the US government for use as an agricultural research station known as Rancho Los Algodones which later became Rancho Bernardo del Campo where many early settlers lived including James Manton who made his name trading goods with Native Americans before coming to live here permanently
