Madera is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 5,595 at the 2010 census. Madera is located on the eastern border of Contra Costa County and has a total area of just over three square miles (8 km²). The name Madera comes from the Spanish word "madera" meaning "burro," which is why it is sometimes called the "burro capital of California." As one of the few towns in Contra Costa County without any industry, Madera relies heavily on agriculture for its economy. The first Europeans to visit Madera were Spanish soldiers who explored the area in 1769 and 1770. A short time later, two American missionaries named James Cook arrived in 1821 and began missionary work in what is now Contra Costa County. In 1827, an agreement was made between San Francisco and Alta California to sell Rancho Rincon de la Mesa to José Castro for $4,000 dollars. Castro developed this land into agrarian society by growing corn, beans, fruits, potatoes and other vegetables. In 1853, madero José Sanchez purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land east of Redwood City from Antonio Coombs for $5 per acre ($0.50 per hectare). This land became known as Rancho La Brea; also known as Los Alamos National Laboratory until 1978 when it moved to Livermore National Labs adjacent to Livermore Valley Regional Park east of Redwood City
