Madera, California is a town in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 15,180 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the Spanish word "Madera", meaning oak tree. The first post office in Madera was established on July 7, 1868. The townsite was named for Elihu Bancroft Marshalls, who donated land to make the community possible in 1871. Madera began as a small agricultural outpost with only a few homes and businesses. In 1923, madERA became one of the first communities to be built on new land east of San Francisco proper after State Route 24 (now Interstate 880) was constructed across the city limits separating Contra Costa and Marin Counties. In 1951, when Interstate 80 split Madera into two parts – one east of I-880 and one west – madERA became an annexe to West Hollywood within Los Angeles County. In 1969, following annexation by Beverly Hills, madERA again became an annexe to Los Angeles County but this time within Orange County. As part of its ongoing effort to increase economic development throughout its constituent areas – includingmadERA’s largest TOD project yet: a mixed use housing development called “Palo Alto” that will include retail space and multifamily units – OC Transpo has since renamed all five former annexes in order from west Hollywood through downtown LASVARADO (Laguna Beach -> Anaheim -> Simi Valley -> Redondo Beach -> Torrance). The town of Madera, California was founded in 1848 by John Sutter. The town was named after General Mariano Vallejo, who helped lead theCalifornia Gold Rush. Madera is located in Alameda County on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay. It is bordered by Contra Costa County to the east and south, Berkeley to the west and north, and Oakland to the northwest. Madera's population was 11,846 at the 2010 census. Madera first received its name from General Mariano Vallejo, who led a group of gold seekers through the area in 1848. One account says that Vallejo called his settlement "Madera" because he could not find any other place with that name in Spanish territory then existing. Another story says that when San Francisco began to be built up around 1840, some of its citizens were so impressed with its wealth that they decided to name their new town "Madera." A third story claims that Captain James Larkin suggested changing the name because it would make him look good when giving presentations about what had been accomplished during his trip upriver from Sacramento to Monterey Bay. Ultimately, however, Captain Larkin's suggestions for naming towns were not followed quite as planned and Madera remained unnamed until 1868 when it was renamed in honor of General Mariano Vallejo himself- an event which also saw construction begin on what is now known as Old City Hall Square (now part of downtown Madera). In 1849 Don Miguel de la Maza took over ownership of Rancho Santa Rita del NoHo from Manuel Nieto and set out to build a road connecting Monterey with Santa Cruz through this region. On July 24, 1850 Mexican forces attacked American farmers nearmodern day Union City while grazing their livestock; four men were killed and twenty-eight others taken prisoner including Don Miguel de la Maza himself who later committed suicide within days due to his thwarted attempt at colonization in California (although modern historians dispute this version of events). In response United States troops drove off Mexican forces from this area beginning what would become known as TheMexican War (1846-1851). In result Mexico ceded control of all land east of Bolsas Creek backto America including Rancho Santa Rita del NoHo which lay within Alameda County boundaries at this time; thus creating two ranchos side by side: one belonging exclusively to Mexicans while another formed part of AngloAmerican ranchers' holdings stretching all along portions east OF Bolsas Creek before becoming annexed into Contra Costa County following countyhood in 1901.)
