Gun targets have been a part of Madera, California for over eighty years. In 1892, the first target range in Madera was opened by Ransom & Beecham. The range consisted of ten single-shot guns and twenty four three-round pistols. It was later expanded to include thirty six guns and sixty three pistols in 1912. In 1914, the first rifle range in Madera was opened by Captain Henson and his son, Captain George Henson Jr. The range consisted of thirty five rifles and seventy two shotguns. In 1916, the first pistol range in Madera was opened by Captains John Ladd and Harry Atherton. The range consisted of forty nine handguns and seventy one rifles. Captain Elisha Satterwhite started shooting targets at his home on Third Street in 1922. By 1928, he had built a successful business selling targets all over County town (now downtown Madera). He continued to sell targets until his death in 1982. His son retired from his business after him and it is currently run as a family tradition by his grandson, George Satterwhite III who also runs the shop today with assistance from his wife Linda (nee Gagne). Today’s target shooters come from all corners of the state and country to converge on the small town of Madera for their annual “Saturday Shootout” where they compete with each other to shoot fifty (50) rounds at various distances using different types of ammunition including lead rounds which can be fired off an airsoft gun or even into steel cans filled with paintballs which are then goal posts for participants to hit! This year marks the 95th anniversary of Captain Elisha Satterwhite’s establishment of this traditional event that has become an important part not only of local history but also Fort Bragg military history!

The first gun target in Madera, California was a blacksmith shop. The town began to develop around this business and the early residents were able to buy targets for their rifles from local suppliers. In 1892, a group of men from Madera decided to start their own shooting club and started using the blacksmith shop as their target range. The first matches took place at the home of John Atherton.

There is a long and varied history of guns target shooting, dating back over two hundred years. The first effective firearms were designed to kill animals, such as crossbows and bows, not people. Ammunition for these early firearms was derived from animal remains or game. As populations increased, so too did the need for new targets. In 1859, Benjamin Banneker developed the first practical gun that could be fired without reloading. Using a type of percussion cap magazine and an adjustable stock he created the first successful firearm target. This weapon was used by troops in the American Civil War to teach infantry tactics. From this initial success came other successful designs including rifles (the AK47), handguns ( handguns like the Glock) and shotguns (the shotgun). The modern era of target shooting began with the development of artillery in the late nineteenth century. Gunners started using targets as part of their training on larger scale battlefields in order to improve their accuracy and skillset for fighting on land and sea against enemy forces. Today’s shooters use different types of targets to train on specific aspects of handgunnery; airsoft pistols are popular examples among recreational shooters which use nails instead of rounds as projectiles

The town of Madera, California was founded in 1847 by the brothers Charles and Joelmaden. The community was located on the banks of the Sacramento River between Stockton and San Francisco. Madera soon became a center for wagon trade and agriculture, with crops such as grapes, apples, strawberries, olives, and almonds being produced. In 1857, Madera became an incorporated city. In 1906, Madera experienced a devastating fire that destroyed much of the town. The fire also caused significant damage to infrastructure such as homes and businesses.Madera has since rebuilt its core and has continued to grow as a residential community. Today, Madera is home to a number of museums including the California Academy of Sciences and the Pacific Film Archive.
