In 1861, John Sutter arrived from Sacramento with his family and began farming what would become Madera Ridge along present-day Highway 101. In 1872, Sutter married Anna Maria Murphy (1827-1902). They raised six children: Lillie (1874-1971), Gladys (1877-1968), Edith (1881-1964), Franklin D., Marcus H., and Nellie A.(1885-1969). The family moved to their current location about 1915 when Anna Maria purchased land from her sister Dolores Parkhurst for $3/acre ($40/km²).
