Madera, California is a small town in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. The population was 5,895 at the 2010 census. Madera is located on the eastern side of Kern County, about 31 miles (50 km) north-northwest of Los Angeles and 10 miles (16 km) east-southeast of Bakersfield. Madera was founded in 1876 by John Leland Mader and his brother Alfred Mader as a community near present-day Needles, primarily because they were wanted for cattle theft in neighboring Mono County. In 1881, maderos formed a labor union to bargain better working conditions and won health benefits for their members that would later be granted to other communities. Madera has been a center for olive oil cultivation since the early 1800s when Spanish missionaries started importing olives from Africa to convert Native American tribes into Christianity. A millinery business started there in 1907 by Mrs. Emma Sayers became one of the largest in California before it closed its doors in 1932 due to World War II rationing of woolen fabrics; today only an exterior view remains standing of what used to be the company’s flagship building on Main Street. The millinery produced velvets, cravats and other fine cloth items which were exported throughout North America and Europe during those years. Today much of Madera’s history can be found buried beneath layers of dust or embedded within city walls dating back over 100 years – including evidence that Adobe Walls – an elaborate series of earthworks built along Highway 99W between Needles and Bieber – were once home to more than 1,500 people who labored daily outside under harsh desert sun conditions! In 1957Madera was renamed “Madera” after General Douglas MacArthur who visited the area while commandant general at nearby Mather Air Force Base during World War II; after his visit, many families chose to move into town following similar military postings nearby. Today MacArthur Boulevard runs through downtownMadera with several restaurants/bars lining its length as well as several large local businesses including two banks and three waterfalls Museums are open every day except Mondays for a fee: Monastery - admission is free but donations are accepted for exhibits related specifically to religion or cultural heritage; Adobe Walls - open daily 9am-4pm except Thursdays when closed for lunch; Pico de la Hacienda Museum - admission is $3 per person but donation appreciated; Oneonta Caverns State Park - Admission is $6 per car but parking available day & night from 7am until 6pm
