Lynwood was founded by printer and politician John Siskind on November 1, 1892 as a small town on Congressional Road east of Hoover Dam. It incorporated as a city on December 3, 1903. At its peak in 1940 it had a population of over 100,000 people. Lynwood experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its proximity to military installations and manufacturing plants; however, during the postwar period Lynwood's prosperity declined as industries moved out or lost their jobs in other cities. The primary shopping districts for residents are located near Westchester Avenue and South Western Avenue (just south of Interstate 5), just north of Mulholland Drive (next to Hollywood Boulevard) and just east of Vine Street; these areas have been consolidated into one mall called "Mulholland" since 1984. Other local retail corridors include Northwest Expressway (which runs parallel to I-5), Century Boulevard/Westlake Avenue (northwest of downtown), North Western Highway/Canyon Road (southwest of downtown), Eastside Boulevard/Sierra Vista Boulevard (southwest of downtown), and Lankershim Blvd./Alameda Street (east side of Alameda). The only major employer in Lynwood is Southern California Edison which has its headquarters there as well as two main fabrication plants: The Morris Jessup Company Complex - built in 1959 and now home to DEC - and McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Assembly Plant - built between 1961 and 1966 now home to Boeing Co., Lockheed Martin & others. Other large employers include ALDI food store chain with over 1,500 stores throughout southern California; Mastercard Corporation with over 350 card processing locations across Southern California; Wells Fargo & Company with more than 60 branches throughout Southern California; Qualcomm Incorporated with its corporate headquarters located in Culver City; Honda Motor Co., Ltd.; TV Guide Magazine Incorporated with its offices also located there; EA Sports Incorporated also headquartered there among many other companies that have done business or operations here such as Toyota Motor Manufacturing USA LLC.; Staples Center -home arena for both the LA Lakers basketball team and NHL's Anaheim Ducks hockey team A variety foods can be found throughout town including Japanese sushi restaurants known for their quality ingredients along with Mexican cuisine from Chaparral Park which offers traditional comal dishes like barbacoa Brava tacos made from chicken breast meat mixed w/ vegetables&mexican rice
Lynwood is located in the Central Valley of California, about an hour and a half drive from Los Angeles. The city was founded on July 11, 1887 by American entrepreneurs John W. Lynwood and his brother-in-law Charles E. Warner, who named it after their home town of Lynnfield, Massachusetts. The original town had a population of just 10 people. The city experienced rapid growth during the early years of the 20th century due to its position as a transportation hub for the central valley region and its location at the junction of two major railroads. Lynwood became an important agricultural center with large crops such as cotton, corn, hay, potatoes, fruits and vegetables; however, industry gradually replaced agriculture in the late 20th century. Today Lynwood remains a vibrant community with many cultural attractions including a theater district filled with classic movie theaters dating back to 1927, modern art galleries and museums including one devoted to aviation history and another dedicated to Mexican culture (both are open daily),lc> several parksincluding one featuring an Olympic size trackand several shopping malls.
