Lynwood, California is an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County, California. It lies east of the city of Los Angeles on the border of Agoura Hills and West Hollywood. The ZIP Code for Lynwood is 90012. As of the 2010 census, its population was 20,651. The first European settler in what is now Lynwood was David Chalfant who arrived in 1847 from Ireland. Lynwood was founded in 1887 by brothers Harry and David Gates. The town was named for the small forest near their farm, which they cleared of trees to make way for cultivation. The first store in Lynwood opened in 1892. Lynwood grew rapidly during the early 20th century, thanks to its location on the Central Valley Railroad and its access to water resources. In 1916, the town became a city under the leadership of Mayor Alfred C. Stone. Growth slowed during World War II, as Lynwood was not eligible for military assistance due to its lack of artillery range. In 1949, Mayor Stone designated Lynwood an annexe of Berkeley Heights, California. During the 1960s and 1970s, Lynwood experienced several high-profile incidents: two people were killed in a car accident at Route 116 and Main Street; four students were shot dead at West Hills High School; and local firefighter Larry Mantle was fatally shot while fighting fires at a home on North Avenue
