Lynwood is located on the eastern edge of the San Fernando Valley and straddles both sides of the 101 Freeway. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.5 square miles (39 km2), all of it land. Lynwood became one of Kern County's first towns when it was annexed by the county on November 3, 1905. Lynwood has seen its share of growth over the years; most notably during World War II when it became home to two major munitions manufacturing plants - Western Electric and United Aircraft Corporation - which helped contribute greatly to the war effort both domestically and abroad. However, much recent growth has been in housing; Lynwood has become one of the most populous communities in Northern California due largely to its proximity to Interstate 5 and other metropolitan areas such as San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles Clippers basketball games being played at nearby Oracle Arena

However, following World War II there were declines in agriculture and manufacturing due to increased competition from other urban areas throughout Southern California and elsewhere in the United States; however, Lynwood has made occasional resurgence over recent decades through various businesses such as real estate development and arts & culture promotion initiatives
