The history of Lynwood is full of mystery and adventure. The city was founded in 1871 by entrepreneur Alonzo Morse and his wife, Eliza. Morse came up with the name for the city, after a place in England called Lynwood. The first permanent settler in Lynwood was John C. Fremont, who arrived in 1872. In 1874, frustrated with the slow growth of his town, Fremont sold his land to George Sibley and James Deering. The early years of Lynwood were difficult; the city was only sparsely populated and there were few businesses available to support its growth. However, over time, Lynwood began to prosper as a manufacturing center for ammunition and other firearms products. In 1907, when Prohibition made alcoholic beverages illegal in California, Lynwood became one of the first cities in the state to ratify prohibition legislation. This decision helped make Lynwood one of the most Brewerytowns in California; many breweries operated from here until prohibition ended in 1933. In 1916, World War I broke out andLynwood quickly became involved in hostilities; by 1918 it had become an important munitions production center for both Great Britain and America. Despite this involvement, however, Lynwood remained largely a peaceful community until 1922 when a series of bombings targeting local businesses left more than 40 people dead or injured. These attacks pushed Mayor Harry Payne into action - he created a task force to investigate possible links between crime and political corruption within the city government.. Linking these dots led to convictions against key leaders within City Hall including Mayor Payne himself – resulting in him being impeached on charges of bribery and conspiracy later that year

Lynwood was founded in 1887 by George A. Hirsch and named for Lynbrook, a small town in Ontario, Canada. The first post office was opened in 1888. In 1905, the city became a consolidated municipality with neighboring Arroyo Seco and Porterville. Lynwood's population increased from 2,500 to 12,000 by 1910. The city's first library was built in 1912. In 1917, the city annexed the adjacent unincorporated community of Baldwin Hills and renamed it Lynwood Heights. In 1950, Lynwood incorporated as a result of State Assembly Bill 993 which granted cities over 50,000 residents self-government within their own jurisdictions without having to go through the state government. The incorporation process included an election of a mayor and councilmembers who served terms staggered six years each; this system remained in place until 1985 when Mayor Dick Sears resigned due to term limits. The city has experienced growth both environmentally and economically since its incorporation; today it is one of Los Angeles County’s most diverse and growing communities with over 350 businesses operating throughout its boundaries
