Lynwood is a small town in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, California, United States. It is located on the corner of Ventura Boulevard and Canoga Avenue. The population was 12,871 at the 2010 census. Lynwood was first settled in 1887 by American settlers who named it Harmon Cove after Samuel Harmon (1793-1875), an early settler and a partner in the hardware store business in nearby Woodland Hills. Lynwood grew rapidly during World War II as a result of its location on the U.S.-Mexican border and its connection to munitions production for the war effort. In 1950, when Interstate 5 was built through the valley, Lynwood prospered as a bedroom community for south LA; however, over time its economic status has decreased despite efforts to attract businesses such as office parks and shopping malls. Today, Lynwood remains largely rural with few high-rise buildings or other development within than three miles of its downtown core. The town has two ZIP codes: 91402 and 91405. The name "Lynwood" comes from "Harmony Cove", which may have been derived from Catalan language word "hórnio". English speakers often call it simply "Los Angeles". According to 2000 census data, there are 3,681 people living in lynwoods Cornerstone Community Pool Area that borders both zip codes 91402 & 91405
