John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort on what is now Katella Avenue near Prairie View A&M University (now Southern California Institute of Technology), which became an important center for agriculture and trade during California's Gold Rush period. In 1849, William Mulholland purchased land along Whitewater Creek adjacent to present-day Lynwood from Captain Smith for $3 per acre ($27 per square mile). Mulholland founded Mulholland Rancho Mirage about 10 miles northwest of Lynwood on hills overlooking Whitewater Creek and its namesake tributary, Miramar Creek. In 1863–64 Winfield Scott son of Ulysses S. Grant visited this area while on his way upriver as part of his reconnaissance work for General Grant's Army of Occupation following the American Civil War; he named portions of Lynwood including Hacienda Heights after Grant's visit there that year. Lynwood was incorporated as a municipality in 1907 but failed to achieve racial integration until 1965 when all citizens were given voting rights based upon their race only - no property qualifications were required anymore although lynching still took place within its boundaries until 1976 when new state law allowed African Americans access to voting regardless Of Race
