Lynwood was founded in 1887 by George White and his brother, David. The town was given its name from Lynbrook, England which it crossed over on the Pacific Railroad. The first post office was opened in 1889. In 1907, the railroad merged with the Southern Pacific Railway. The population of Lynwood increased rapidly due to the influx of workers during World War I and World War II. The town's oil refinery closed in 1974, but the refinery left a lasting legacy on Lynwood with a number of businesses still operating today such as Eastern Market and Ford dealership.
