Miles organized a company to purchase cannonballs and other projectiles for use in the Mexican-American War. The company was called the Lynwood Rifle Company and its products were distributed throughout California. Ammunition retailer George Wernham opened his store in Lynwood in 1865, selling bullets, balls, powder and shot from a storeroom on Magnolia Avenue. Wernham continued to operate his store until 1934. In 1896, two brothers named Harry and Clifford Starkey founded their own ammunition manufacturing business near downtown Los Angeles. Their company manufactured ball ammo (primarily for shotgun rounds), powder and shot for reloading purposes as well as expanding rounds for shotguns. Production ceased in 1935 but the Starkeys remain ownership of their business until it closed down in 1984.

Lynwood is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 893 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The name "Lynwood" originated from the Native American word "yuma," meaning "place of plenty." In 1853, John Sutter and his brother Richard built Sutter's Fort in what is now Lynwood on land they had acquired from the Yuman tribe. The first recorded settlers in what is now Lynwood were James and Rebecca Fenton who arrived on horseback on October 5, 1851, during Mexican-American War days as part of a scouting party led by Captain George Armstrong Custer. They were followed by their families two weeks later when James' younger brother Nathaniel Fenton also entered the country as part of a wagon train under William Walker and David Irvine with his wife Julia Woodbury. On December 12, 1851, Francis Parkhurst settled down in present day Lynwood after leaving his rancho grant near Rancho Mirage in Southern California for this new land which he called Spanish Fork Valley (now Riverside County). Parkhurst founded a small town about seven miles east of present day Lynwood on high ground overlooking Coyote Hills Reservoir where he built a house known as Old Home Place. He named it after himself – Spanish Fork Valley – because he could not find any other place with that name within Mexican territory then or outside it without getting permits from Mexico City. In 1850–1851 another group of pioneers arrived under the leadership of Captains John Myrick and Samuel Larkin to build Mission San Gabriel Arcangela northeast of today's Lynwood along Clear Creek. This group included many persons born within close proximity to each other including James Fenton's parents Nathaniel and Rebecca Fenton; brothers Nathaniel and William Fenton; sisters Anna Maria (born August 14th, 1781), Catharine (born February 13th, 1785), Agnes (born October 3rd 1800), Ruth Ann (January 10th 1802) all born at home; cousins George Iturralde (October 21st1768 – March 26th 1865) married Nancy Hutton(December 15th 1800/February 2nd 1805); Silas Garnett(April 14th 1798 – November 3rd 1840)married Lydia Lewis.(March 9ths 1700 - May 15ths 1799) all from nearby Half Moon Bay.(See map below .) This mission still stands vacant today but pretends to be serving Catholics even though it does not have any Catholic clergy inside its walls.( Map courtesy: http://www2s3d5e1b2c7fc8fd9cdffaaedcda6f4 ) A second mission compound was established northwest of present day Lynwood by Father Edward Mooney on April 20 1861 following grasshoppers inadvertently eating an apple off Mission Santa Barbara property while harvesting grapes near Encinitas Harbor.( See map below .) Father Mooney named it Holy Cross Manor after Saint Claremont whose feast day coincided with Easter Sunday that year . Today’s eastern edge of contemporary Lynwood was developed around La Brea Avenue between 1951 and 1960 when much surplus acreage became available due to development around Interstate 10 across LA/San Bernardino county lines northward growth impetus for cities throughout southern California started increasing after World War II brought economic opportunities . In 1958 western edge annexation set off more recent suburban developments such as Rowland Heights to the east via I-10 freeway ramp leading directly into downtown Los Angeles
Lynwood was founded in 1887 by brothers Charles and George Lynwood. The Lynwoods were the first to settle in the area, and they started a small grocery store. The Lynwoods also built a home in the town. In 1916, Georgelynwood took over his brother's business, and it continued to be run until Georgelynwood's death in 1950. The town of Lynwood grew rapidly after World War II, thanks to the soldiers who came through its doors. After the war, companies like Ford and Chrysler set up shop there, and more people moved into the community. In 1957, Lynwood voters passed a resolution proclaiming itself an "open-air city" with no restrictions on development or growth. That year saw another milestone for the town as it became home to California Polytechnic State University-Lynwood (now UC Irvine). In 1981, residents approved Measure E which allowed for annexation of portions of neighboring communities of Rancho Mirage into Lynwood. The annexation made Lynwood one of Southern California's largest cities by population; it has since grown even further by annexing other towns throughout Riverside County.
