Los Gatos is a city in Santa Clara County, California, United States. The population was 21,799 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Jose–Sunnyvale–Santa Clara Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent residents were Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1795 and built Mission San Antonio de Atacama on present-day Atacama Desert. They came from the town of Guadalajara in Jalisco, Mexico. A year later they founded Mission San Francisco de Asís on Mount Diablo near downtown Los Gatos. In 1821 the mission was secularized and turned into an agricultural parish under jurisdiction of Monterey Province; it remained that way until 1830 when Angeles Province separated from Monterey and took over as mission jurisdiction for all of Santa Clara County. By 1851 Los Gatos had a population of 1,200 people and had two churches: one Anglo (the original St John's Episcopal Church) and one Mexican Protestant (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). In 1868 William Eaton bought Rancho Rinconada del Diablo from José Estrada y Ortiz for $2,500 (). Eaton renamed the rancho "Los Gatos" after his family home at 4641 El Camino Real in La Jolla, California (now part of Pacific Beach). He developed it into a large sheep station with 7 miles (11 km) of road running through its center surrounded by oak woodlands and desert brushland (). Among Eaton's early investors were Roy Hillyer (), Harry Bates (), Waddell Cogswell () Alonzo Boulding (), John Sutter (), Prentice Chase () In 1886 he sold most or all his holdings to George Harker (). Harker subdivided the land into hundreds of acres (meanwhile building up Los Gatos' infrastructure including schools and a water system), which remain today within city boundaries subject only to occasional residential zoning changes

Los Gatos, California is a small town located in San Mateo County, California. The population was 8,545 at the 2010 census and it is the most populous community in San Mateo County. The name of the town is derived from Spanish-era Mission Santa Clara de Asís and it refers to a small hill near where the mission was built. The first European settlers in Los Gatos were Catholic missionaries who arrived in 1849. They named the settlement after Saint George, Patron of Europe and Asia. In 1852, General Mariano Castro founded a Mexican land grant called Rancho Los Gatos para los niños y les pobres (Rancho Los Gatos for Children and Families). This ranch served as a haven forlos indigent Mexican citizens who had no other place to go. From here, they began to develop agriculture and cattle ranching around what is now downtown Los Gatos. In 1906, Congressman John Latham proposed that Los Gatos become an incorporated city because of its proximity to San Francisco Bay Area airports and its potential for growth as an electronics manufacturing center. The proposal passed both houses of Congress but was vetoed by Governor Goodwin Davis because he felt that incorporation would only increase taxes without resulting in any real benefits for the townspeople or their businesses. However, Mayor Oliveira successfully lobbied Davis into signing the bill into law on July 1, 2006 as Los Gatos became an incorporated city with City Hall located at 400 Main Street (). Today, Los Gatos remains one of Southern California's most vibrant communities with many high-tech companies locating here including Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Apple Inc., Qualcomm Incorporated (QCOM) and Nvidia Corporation (NVDA). It also boasts several top cultural attractions such as Hollywood Walk of Famestarring Steven Spielberg () and Ricky Gervais (), Live Oak Park (), El Camino Real (),[1]and Scripps Howard Theatre ().
