In 1852 Captain George Folsom founded what would become Northern Pacific Railway at an abandoned mine near present day Interstate 80; this led to the town's founding as a railroad town with its own post office in 1854. Los Gatos experienced rapid growth following World War II as military bases were established here such as Glenn Relocation Center and Naval Air Station El Toro; many jobs resulted from these deployments including construction workers, engineers, scientists and other technical experts needed by defense contractor companies throughout the Bay Area during that time period. However Growth stopped soon after when most plants closed or moved out due to competition from new housing developments along I-80 corridor which had begun becoming more prevalent in Southern California during that time frame Additionally numerous stores failed during those years due primarily to overspending caused by easy access to cheap credit available through loan sharkiness Additionally technology has impacted our economy greatly with startups moving into downtown areas formerly occupied by larger institutions Many small businesses have also disappeared because their products are no longer fashionable or affordable for consumers today
