The first scopes were developed in the early 1800s in Los Gatos, California. The first telescope was made by Professor Ebenezer Howard in 1827 and it used a lens and a pair of eyeglasses to view objects at a far distance. In 1878, Reverend George Pyne built the first satisfactory telescope on Long Island and he used an oil-fired lamp to make his observations. In 1887, American astronomer Capt. James Folsom designed and built the largest telescope ever made, the Franklin Telescope, which was located on Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona. This telescope was used for mapping the sky and for observing binary stars. By 1923, all major American observatories had telescopes with either parabolic or spherical lenses that could resolve objects up to about 20 cm (8 inches). The region now known as Los Gatos was first settled by Mexican Americans in 1847 on Rancho Arenal de las Partidas (later Rancho San Bernardo), about 9 miles northeast of present-day Los Gatos. The area became an agricultural community with landowning Anglo farmers and Missionaries settling nearby in the 1850s, followed by Japanese Americans living on the old Mountain View Naval Air Station property east of town beginning in 1941. Los Gatos is located in San Mateo County, California. The city is named for John Sutter, the founder of the Sutter Ranch. The first permanent settlement in what is now Los Gatos was made in 1847 by a group of Americans from Illinois called the Explorers Battalion. In 1851, $1,000 was offered for land that would form the nucleus of Los Gatos. The offer was accepted and within three years, 8 square miles had been surveyed and sold to George Wickersham. On July 1, 1853, the town site was residents held their first meeting with Wickersham as Mayor. By 1860, there were over 100 people living in Los Gatos. The town grew rapidly and by 1865 it had a population of 2200 people. In 1870 Supervisor Charles Haddon appointed Jens Jensen as City Marshal to keep order in the town while he traveled away on business or to take meetings with other officials at various locations around California. In 1872 Jensen became Mayor after winning an election against incumbent James Fenton which demonstrated just how popular he was with voters. From 1870-1875 Jensen led several important civic projects such as creating a water system and building a schoolhouse/library complex which remain some of Los Gatos’ most iconic landmarks today. In 1876 Don Bollinger became mayor after serving two terms as supervisor before being elected to his current position in 1880; during this time period too there were many civic projects completed such as adding sidewalks and gutting an old riverbank warehouse into a public library complex that still stands today. When Bollinger left office in 1888 newest mayor Harry Quimby took office but QUIMBY'S FIRST YEAR WAS A HUGE success due to the fact that he pushed through major infrastructure projects like expanding sewer lines and replacing aging streetlights with new LED lights throughout town center areas! During Quimby's first year also saw construction begin on what would eventually become one of Los Gatos’ most well known neighborhoods- Union Street; during this time period also much progress was made toward developing another key downtown area such as Commercial Street which is now home to many restaurants and bars along its length today! During World War II much activity occurred within Los Gatos due to both our country's involvement (the 1940s were very difficult for America due to rationing)and World War II itself; numerous businesses closed during wartime because they couldn't processed any orders coming from outside of America! However during 1945 when things calmed down following hostilities ended local businesses started up once again just like before! Afterward many residents decided they wanted their own piece of history so they organized themselves into committees/associations which continue functioning even unto this day! Some notable organizations include: American Planning Association (APS), Foundation for Historical Review (FHR), Historic Preservation League of Santa Clara County (HPLCC), etc.) The 20th century has seen plenty changes within Los Gatos however its core values have not changed at all; each individual retains their sense of community service despite having different roles within society! Today los gatistas are proud participants in NCAA Division III athletics along side some incredibly talented athletes!!!
