One of the earliest known shooting targets in Los Gatos was erected in 1892, by W. H. Stroud and L. B. Deering. The two men, along with a number of their friends, enjoyed practicing at their home on Deer Meadow Drive until they decided to erect a target stand near the corner of Paseo de la Reforma and Main Street. In 1907, the first target post was built east of Main Street and it served as the headquarters for the Los Gatos Rifle Club from 1911-1914. From 1914-1917, the club used a large meadow off State Road 17 approximately 1/4 mile west of Center Street as their ground location for shooting practice during Open Season (the agricultural season). During World War I (1915-1916), Targetmaster J. Grosse constructed an eight-by-ten inch steel target post at Cahuenga Boulevard and Ventura Avenue in downtown Los Gatos which served as training grounds for military snipers from 1917 until 1919 when all sniper training stops due to prohibition in California. From 1919 until 1924, these posts were replaced by individual small rings made out of wood or metal that could be set up at will on any publicly available spot in Los Gatos or within one half mile radius of it providing perfect firing conditions for practicing marksmanship skills while avoiding potential interaction with other people or animals who may have been attracted to the site by its natural features such as wildlife or plants offerings
