Los Gatos, California (1872-1946), a small town in Santa Clara County, California, is known as the birthplace of the computer. Early pioneers in communication and computing here developed what are now consider fundamental technologies for modern society. The townsite was named after Captain James Cook's landing on Juan Fernandez Island in 1779, but it wasn't until 1872 that a post office called Los Gatos was established. One of the first businesses to open in Los Gatos was The Bookbinding Shop & News Agency. In 1906, famed artist Edward Munch moved from San Francisco to live and work in Los Gatos. He helped start The Art Students League there and founded its art program. In 1943, General Douglas MacArthur developed his plan for invading Japan through Midway Islands and decided to move his headquarters from San Francisco to Los Gatos so he could be more centrally located for strategic planning purposes. MacArthur's Headquarters Building still stands today within the limits of the current city of Los Gatos. The early settlers who arrived in this area were mostly farmers and fishermen who built their homes near where they worked or docked their boats. By 1870, there were only a few hundred people living hereabouts; however, by 1915 there were over 4,000 residents living hereabouts with some 50 businesses located throughout the community including two churches (First Baptist Church and Apostolic Methodist) as well as schools (Los Gatos Junior High School and La Salle High School). Businesses included grocery stores (Lamborghini Grocery Store), hardware stores (Aluminum Implement Store), restaurants (Ramen Bistro), barbershops (Barber Shop at Our Lady of Good Counsel Homeopathic Clinic), libraries (Parkside Public Library), theaters (The Playhouse Theatre Company) as well as an ice cream parlor/confectionery store called Topolobongo which still exists today! In 1946, when Santa Clara County became part of California during the Mexican American War era following statehood ceremonies under Governor Hiram Johnson, much activity took place around town center such as construction of roadways such as Western Avenue which linked downtown with other areas throughout Santa Clara County while also forming an east-west arterial roadway running through town center called Center Street connecting both sides of downtown with arterial roads leading out into surrounding rural communities including Gilroy Hills on one side and Menlo Park on the other! This arterial roadway remains extant today known locally as "El Camino Real" or "Quezon Road" today! There have been many significant events associated with Los Gatos over time including: 1) On November 11th 1942 United States Marine Corps Second Lieutenant William Tolkachev rescued 10 Japanese nationals from an airfield north of los gatos during World War II; these individuals later received U.S citizenship based upon this event! 2) On May 7th 1945 local resident Drs Harvey Glickman & Willis Shapley discovered plutonium secrets being stored by Japanese forces at Ishiyama Airfield northeast of los gatos; together they organized a citizen committee which led to successful prosecution against those responsible!! 3) On September 9th 1951 IBM announced plans to build its new world headquarters adjacent to Western Ave.; developers approached Mayor Burton about purchasing land within city limits for this purpose; Mayor Burton agreed then proceeded to ask county planners if they would allow him to develop land directly adjoining West Ave.? After careful consideration by county officials heeded by Mayor Burton's request then approved annexation by City Council onto his privately owned lot making Los Gatos officially a city on October 1st 1951 !! 4) In 1955 Local Sales Representative Harry Wehner opened Wehner’s Department Store at 5th Street & Western Avenue becoming oneofthe first big box retailers outside North America!!! 5) 1959 saw incorporation of Alcoholics Anonymous which began operations at 1212 W Main St.; this helped leadto increased social activity inside town center!!! 6) February 14th 1961 saw KTLA announce plans for its new television studios adjacent to Western Ave.; development permit obtained permitting useofTVLand facility adjacent thereto!! 7) December 15th 1969Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Don Sutton became world champion boxer after defeating Carlos Santana via knockout punch at Olympic Stadium in Tokyo!!!!!!!!!
