Los Gatos, California (formerly known as Stanford City) is a city located in Santa Clara County, California. The population was 57,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area. The first Europeans to visit Los Gatos were Spanish explorers in 1769, who named it after the Gatschet River which they found in what is now Santa Clara County. In 1868, Alvarado and his men discovered gold near present-day Los Gatos Creek and organized a town around it because they could not find any other location with enough water or land to support a permanent settlement. By 1870, there were over 200 people living in Los Gatos when Alvarado died from disease complications at age 54. The town was renamed Stanford City after American educator George Stanford (1795-1885). In 1907, Congress passed the National Defense Act which authorized the United States military to establish camps inside of Mexican territory for detention of aliens who had crossed into U.S. soil without proper papers or through an unauthorized act of violence or crime. A group of Californians led by businessman Edmund Condon lobbied for the city to be included within this camp and proposed that it be called "Gatlingtown". On January 3, 1908, Mayor John Wessels approved the name change and on February 3rd founded what would become Los Gatos Park District; one year later on November 5th Honda Motor Company opened its new assembly plant in nearby Palo Alto Township so thaturden moved production from Japan back east where it would have improved quality control standards for their products before being exported to America

Los Gatos is located in Santa Clara County, California. The city was founded on July 15, 1847 by Captain John C. Fremont and his men as the town of Los Gatos Creek after they discovered a gold vein in the hills around present-day Los Gatos. The first post office was established in 1849 and the name of the city changed to Los Gatos on October 1, 1850. There were few buildings built until the early 1860s when an area east of Main Street became known as the "Granite Hill" because of its abundance of granite boulders. By 1870 there were over 100 businesses in Los Gatos with a population of 575 people. In 1892, local farmers started raising hay for export to San Francisco and demand for hay became so high that prices skyrocketed from $2 per bushel to $15 per bushel. Much political action took place during this time including voter attendance at public meetings where ordinances were passed or resolutions were drafted which later became law. One such ordinance created a waterworks system providing water for industry, homes and other civic uses within one year and it remains one of the most successful public works projects ever undertaken in Santa Clara County. In 1907, two brothers named George Waddell opened a grocery store at Seventh Avenue and Broadway which would become one of Santa Clara County's largest retailers for over fifty years until it closed its doors in 1984 due to heavy competition from neighboring El Sobrante Shopping Center. In 1909, Mayor Harry Jahn appointed Don Ritchie as chairman of the city Planning Commission which helped develop plans for new development that would include large shopping malls such as Walgreen's Park Place located south of Main Street between First Avenue and Sixth Street (later known as Silicon Valley Plaza). The 1920s saw an influx of Italian Americans who brought their own culture with them while making new friends among fellow Italians acrossSanta Clara County during this time period known as "the Golden Age". During these years there was also growth in small business ownerships with many women starting their own businesses during this time frame such as Ada Mae Tripp who began her own dry goods store at Fourth Street and Guerrero Boulevard called The Gables before moving to Third Street and Mission Road near City Hall soon after World War II ended; Lillian Hellman opening her first theater on Market Square; Anita Loeb opening her last movie theater before she committed suicide; Alice Paul performing at Hollywood Bowl; etc...
