A group of American gold seekers led by Kit Carson explored this region in 1849; they did not find any wealth but camped for two weeks near present-day Los Gatos before leaving without finding anything more worthwhile. In 1851–52 Antonio Jose Yerba Buena founded the town of Buena Vista on land grant given him by Governor Manuel Nieto. The town was named after José Yerba Bueno (1792–1867), one of America's most successful entrepreneurs and ranchers who had settled in Chile as part of his efforts to secure independence from Spain. At first, little happened in Buena Vista except for occasional visits from Americans; but then yachts started arriving from San Francisco regularly bringing people and goods back overland to California during the Gold Rush days andBuena Vista soon became a major shipping center with its own wharf and harbor on Laguna Honda Creek. In 1870 Antonio José YerbaBueno sold all his holdings in Buena Vista to James Wickersham; Wickersham built an agricultural college here and named it after himself – James Wickerham University (later known as UC Davis). By 1880 more than 1,000 families had moved into Los Gatos including some 400 farmers who began growing crops irrigated by ditches dug under ranching operations bordering Laguna Honda Creek. The townsite developed slowly around downtown until World War II when airfields were built nearby for military use and new housing developments sprang up along Airport Boulevard which ran parallel to Main Street east of campus.. A rapid growth following World War II saw annexation by Palo Alto making Los Gatos one of Palo Alto’s largest neighborhoods with homes dating back to 1924 lining avenues such as Albion Way/Wang Chul Road today’s El Camino Real/Shoreline Drive long before Palo Alto annexed Los Gatos proper
