It is home to the University of California, Los Gatos and has been called the " Silicon Valley of the North" for its concentration of technology companies. The city was founded by Spaniards in 1847 as part of Rancho San Miguel de Atascadero, although it may have been named for Mount Diablo (a mountain near Redding) or for a certain creek that ran through the area. The first town in Los Gatos was called Easton, and there were only a few buildings and no residents when John C. Fremont discovered gold near present-day Los Gatos on November 12, 1848. A group of men who had been prospecting in nearby Santa Clara County heard about Fremont's find and decided to move to where he had found gold. They named their new settlement after General José Ygnacio Buena Vista y Osorio, commander of Mexican forces at the time who had helped liberate Mexico from Spanish rule. The town grew quickly because people thought they could get rich mining gold around here. In 1863–64, miners discovered silver in what is now known as Gold Hill and began building up Los Gatos into an important center for mining operations. By 1876, Los Gatos was one of the largest cities in Northern California because so many mines were open; it also became an important port for shipping goods from these mines to other parts of the state. During World War II, Los Gatos played a major role as an munitions plant due to its location just south of San Francisco Bay Area and its access to ample water supplies which allowed it to produce vast amounts of ammunition without having any trouble with bombing raids by Allied forces during that war. After the war ended, however, most factories closed down except for one that produced computers until 1993 when Apple Inc bought it and converted it into their first campus Campus USA outside Cupertino before eventually demolishing it within five years; this site is now occupied by Google Earth development .
