That year, the first target stand was built on what is now First Street in downtown Los Gatos. The stand was operated by George A. Hawkins and his son-in-law, James W. Maxwell. Los Gatos is a small city in Santa Clara County, California. The population was 3,388 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Santa Clara County and the largest city within its boundaries. Los Gatos has been inhabited by the Ohlone people since before European settlement began. The first Europeans to come to Los Gatos were fur traders from Riga, Latvia in 1827. In 1838, Juan Bautista de Anza founded the Presidio of San Francisco on what is now downtown Los Gatos. He named it after his hometown of Gutierrez de la Hoz in Spain - an early Spanish settlement that he had visited while exploring California for Spain. The presidio was abandoned in 1846 when Mexico gained control of California. The first post office for Los Gatos was established in 1851; it became known as Ansaldo (Spanish for "Ansalda"). A dry goods store and general grocery operated there until 1865 when a branch of The Merchants National Bank opened there; it remains one of only a few banks still existing in Los Gatos today.. In 1888, John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill northeast of town on the old Hearst Ranch; this mill continued operations until 1933 when it closed because of World War II bombing raids by the United States military Air Forces during World War II.. From 1889-1891, George Custer led an expedition into northern California which included a route through Los Gatos Pass.. In 1901, Ralph Waldo Emerson lived at 811 Fourth Street SE in present day downtown Los Gatos for six months before moving to Concord, Massachusetts where he spent most of his life and died two years later at 83 years old.. A plaque honoring him can be found near Oregon Drive NE just east of Main Street across from Lakeridge Elementary School.. In 1907-1908, construction began on Oracle Arena which would become one of North America's most popular stadiums and remain so to this day. On November 12th 1908 game #6 between Cal State Fullerton and USC resulted in over 100 arrests following street riots that began nearby about 4:00pm PST that evening.; these riots are also recognized as being one spark leading to modern law enforcement tactics used against organized crime including SWAT teams today
Los Gatos began as a small ranching town in the late 1800s, and by the 1920s had become a major agricultural center. The town was renamed Los Gatos after General George C. Marshall, who served as United States Secretary of War from 1921 to 1923. In the 1940s, Los Gatos became an important military installation and continues to be so today.
