In 1911, Los Gatos became part of Santa Clara County, and in 1916 its incorporation as a city made it one of the largest cities in California. After the war, however, growth slowed and the city experienced some decline until the late 1980s when it regained much of its former prosperity thanks to its location within Silicon Valley and its growing technology industry. The history of Los Gatos goes back to 1887 when George A. Smith founded Prospect Hill on land that he acquired from José Joaquín Mora y Aguayo after Mora had failed to purchase land from John Sutter for his new town of Sacramento. Smith planned to build a cotton plantation but abandoned plans after several years due to lack of funds. He met his future wife here while working on his farmstead which he purchased from her brother-in-law Jacob Riis in 1884. Soon after moving into his home at Prospect Hill, Smith began planning what would become Los Gatos; he named it after himself because he believed that “Gatos” (cows) would be attracted to the high ground near where he lived next door. In early 1887, two men – Hiram Brownell and William Tebbetts – arrived at prospect Hill with plans for a water filtration plant they had developed called “The Ganges” on nearby Woodside Creek bedding up against hills such as Mount Holyoke Range (now known as Half Moon Bay). They soon realized that their project could not be completed without money so they returned home without completing their work; Brownell later claimed credit for inventing water purification methods known today as reverse osmosis systems.* Two years later Abraham Lincoln Hughes came across the project while driving through Santa Clara County on horseback looking for potential mineral rights; Hughes liked what he saw and donated $5,000 towards completion.* Upon completion of their project, Brownell and Tebbetts renamed their company Pacific Purifiers Incorporated* It wasn’t until 1913 when Los Gatos incorporated as a city under common law† due to pressure from other communities adjacent to its jurisdiction such as Saratoga Springs† (* meaning “owing allegiance only unto [city name]”*) During World War II many residents moved away or were forced out due to rationing or bombings raids; however those who remained faced difficult times due to economic recession following Pearl Harbor*.
