It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and has been nicknamed "The City by the Bay" for its location on the shore of San Francisco Bay. Los Gatos was settled in 1876 by American soldiers who were stationed at Fort Point naval base as part of General John C. Frémont's 1st Cavalry Division during his campaign to capture California from Mexico. The town was named after Genl John Sutter, who had founded Sutters Ranch in what is now Fremont County in 1851. By 1880, Los Gatos had a post office, three churches and over 100 residents. In 1907, Los Gatos became one of thirteen cities to be incorporated within the newly formed county of Peninsula (later Santa Clara). In 1915, King Cotton became the first black mayor of Los Gatos when he won election against incumbent Mayor Leland Stanford Jr.. From 1945 until 1976 it was an all-white community with African Americans only employed as janitors and other support staff within white businesses and institutions such as Pritchett Middle School and Kaiser Permanente Hospital
Los Gatos was founded in 1876 by George C. Smith and his family. The town is home to a number of historical sites, including the old mill, the Los Gatos Arsenal, and the Los Gatos Cemetery.
